Prof. Eyasu Makonnen

Prof. Eyasu Makonnen Eshetu has started his academic carrier as a Graduate Assistant at Faculty of Medicine, Addis Ababa University (AAU) since August 1980 soon after his graduation with B. Pharm from AAU. Since then he has gone through different academic ranks till, he became full professor of Pharmacology in February 2003. Currently, he is a Deputy Head of the World Bank Supported Centre for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa), CHS, AAU, Ethiopia. He had served as Head, Department of Pharmacology, and as Coordinator, Biomedical Research and Training Program, Faculty of Medicine, AAU for several years. He had advised and is still advising over 110 MSc and 28 PhD students. He has published over 229 peer reviewed scientific papers and books/book chapters as well as over 180 abstracts/monographs/training modules. He has served as external examiner for both undergraduate and post graduate students (MSc and PhD) both in local universities and abroad. He has received several research grants from different organizations including, European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) Novartis Pharma, Astra Zeneca, RIKEN (Japan), World Bank, NORHED, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc. He has executed and is executing over 24 research projects He is involved in various consultancy services for many organizations. He has served as a member of National Drug Advisory Committee of Ethiopia for six years. He serves as a member of editorial boards in several National and International peer reviewed journals. He is the recipient of Gold Medal award for being an outstanding student of the year 1980, School of Pharmacy, AAU; prize of KERKA Pharmaceuticals, Slovenia; Gold Medal for Research and Development from Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association; Gold Medal High Honour Laureate (Abyssinia Award) ; and many others including certificates of merits/appreciation from different national and international organizations. He has served as a president of Korea-Ethiopia Alumni Association (KEAA) for more than four years. He has also served as member and vice president in different professional societies and national/international committees. He has served as member and Chairperson of the National Health Science and Technology council and National Health Research Ethics Review Committee (NRERC) for over 10 years. He is currently serving as a member of National Research Ethics Review Board again. He is heavily involved in offering trainings on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Bioethics. He is one of the founding members of Leishmaniasis in East Africa Platform (LEAP), Africa Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi). He served as a chairperson and member of Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for many multicenter clinical trials. He is also serving as a National Moringa Task Force at present. His research focuses mainly on clinical trials and phytotherapy. He is a fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Science and has served as a member of the Health Working Group of the academy. He is serving as a chair of the Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in Ethiopia currently.
