Education and Trainings
CDT has been involved in capacity building of researchers, and students across Africa by offering a Master’s program course in Clinical Trials as well as short courses. Short courses
Short courses
We offer a number of short courses to clinical research and support staff, partners, and interested individuals, with the aim of ensuring competency and compliance with ethics standards for the conduct of clinical trials. Some of the courses include Good clinical practice (GCP training), Research ethics, Systematic review training and Qualitative data analysis. We also offer trainings relevant for evaluation and implementation, such as, cost-effectiveness studies, complex interventions, policy dialogue and theory of change.
Clinical Operations (ClinOPs) Training
The ClinOps training is mainly intended for study coordinators based in low-and middle-income countries. The training is an intensive course of 10 weeks designed for clinical research professionals performing essential trial implementation activities at sites. The unique feature of the training program is its syllabus, which is anchored in the WHO/TDR Core Competency Framework for Clinical Research, and developed in consultation with various Product Development Partners. The training also prioritizes understanding of and keys to successfully addressing the critical challenges of conducting clinical trials in resource-limited settings and low- and middle-income countries.
MSc Clinical Trials
CDT-Africa has been running a highly competitive Master’s program in Clinical Trials since 2019. The program provides students from across Africa with a theoretical and practical understanding of the issues involved in the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of clinical trials pertaining to drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, behavioural interventions and medical devices.
PhD Training
The center is offering PhD program in Translational Medicine in Drug Development, Diagnostic Development and Vaccine Development. The program aims to produce independent scientists who would have the appropriate knowledge, attitude and skills in designing, developing, and delivering medical solutions - vaccines, diagnostics, and drugs - through an integrated multidisciplinary translational biomedical sciences training.
CDT-Africa has also been offering PhD fellowships for students from across Africa in collaboration with Addis Ababa University, departments of Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, and Psychiatry.
Post-doctoral fellowships
CDT-Africa has been offering Postdoctoral trainings for PhD graduates. The postdoctoral fellows are engaged in drug development, diagnostic development, vaccine development and complex intervention works. With the program, the Centre is empowering young PhD graduates to acquire additional skills and experience in medical discovery and developments. The program gives the postdoctoral students a dedicated time for focusing on a research project, access to modern facilities and mentorship from senior scientists/researchers, critical skills and confidence to be independent research leader, financial support, opportunity for collaboration/partnership, opportunity for publications, and opportunity to define their career path.
Internship Program
CDT-Africa has developed an internship program for interested applicants who would like to be involved in future carrier in medical discovery and clinical trial. An intern is a trainee who has signed on with an organization for a brief period. An intern’s goal is to gain work experience, occasionally some university credit and always an overall feel for the profession they are interning in. The engagement period may range from a handful of weeks up to several years. The intern is expected to assist and contribute to the team. He or she will be shadowing someone as they perform their daily duties, observing their activities and learning what the role entails via indirect experience. At the tail end of the internship, the intern may have to make a career defining decision, either to continue in the field of internship or try something else entirely.
